Making the Most of Offshore Outsourcing to the Philippines

For most businesses, offshore outsourcing to the Philippines is a sensible option. After all, the Philippines is one of the leading business process outsourcing (BPO) destinations in the world. From being just a blip on the global outsourcing radar about ten years ago, the country has gone on to become a business process outsourcing powerhouse – a leader in the voice services sub sector of the global outsourcing industry and second to India in the complex services and non voice services sub sector.

After going through what has been described as a “growth spurt” in 2006, the business process outsourcing in the Philippines continues to show tremendous growth and seems to be heading towards what has been called “maturation,” in which the industry develops from providing mostly voice services in the beginning to also providing a considerable number of complex and non voice services including animation, graphic design, typesetting, desktop publishing, legal services, web design, composition, shared services, and software development.

Ovum, an international research firm, said in a report that the Philippines is already second to India in providing services the report described as knowledge process outsourcing or KPO. Knowledge process outsourcing involves tasks – as mentioned in the Ovum report: sophisticated services for health care; research and development; legal process outsourcing; and credit and investment research – that are information related or knowledge-related and are outsourced or managed by employees from service providers or third party firms.

To make the most of offshore outsourcing to the Philippines, or any other BPO destination, your company should know the strengths of the service provider destinations, how your company can leverage these strengths and exactly what kind of expertise and skills would help you achieve your desired goals.

One of the strengths of service providers of offshore outsourcing in the Philippines is the language skills or communication skills of the employees. The Philippines is well known for its large working age, English-speaking population. Closely related to the language skills is the cultural fit. Filipinos are known for having an affinity with Western culture. The majority of the population has, in fact, grown up American culture in their lives: from the movies, to the television, sports and the like.

Aside from that, business process outsourcing employees in the Philippines, in general, are known for having a helpful, friendly, and accommodating attitude. These qualities would be very important for several outsourced processes or tasks such as technical support, help desk, and customer service.

Offshore outsourcing to the Philippines also meets budget considerations because of the relatively low wages – and therefore lower costs for the client – and a number of other cost effective solutions. But even with the lower costs, clients gain access to a workforce composed of highly skilled, technically proficient, talented and tech-savvy professionals. Service providers in the Philippines have also increased and some evolved into managing other highly specialized processes. Keep in mind that highly specialized skills and more specific tasks often lead to higher quality results.
